Uninvite the Saboteurs to the Holiday Party!

Oct 23, 2023

Are the holidays really the “hap-happiest season of all”, as the Andy Williams song suggests? There are parties and family gatherings, yummy treats and pretty decorations, singing carolers and gifts all around. What’s not to love about the holidays, right? 🎄 🎁  🎶

Well, while many people eagerly anticipate the joys of season, for some it can bring on pressure, anxiety, loneliness, guilt, shame, and sadness.

A study from the American Psychological Association shows that nearly 38% of individuals report experiencing increased stress during the holidays, citing reasons such as financial pressures, time constraints, and the pressure to participate in social gatherings.

A survey by the National Alliance on Mental Illness found that approximately 64% of people with mental illness note that the holiday season makes their conditions worse.

The combination of social and financial pressure, bloated To Do lists and bellies, and unrealistic expectations of the perfect holiday experience, can create a significant emotional burden and feelings of overwhelm and shame. And the FOMO... oh, soooo much FOMO!

🍰  On top of that, all those yummy meals and treats that we “can’t pass up” can derail our commitment to our healthy practices, bringing guilt and shame to the party. 🍪 🥂

There are practical strategies to manage and minimize stress during this time. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the holiday season with a sense of peace and balance:

  1. Prioritize Self-Care: Set aside time for activities such as mindfulness, going on a walk, or enjoying a quiet moment with a good book. 📖 🚶‍♀️
  2. Set Realistic Expectations: Embrace imperfections and focus on the moments of joy and connection that make this time special.
  3. Manage Finances Wisely: Set a budget and stick to it. Remember, the true spirit of the season lies in meaningful experiences and heartfelt gestures, not extravagant spending.
  4. Practice Gratitude: Take time to express appreciation for the people around you and the moments that bring warmth to your heart. 🙏
  5. Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family, or mental health professionals. Sharing your concerns and feelings can provide valuable perspective and emotional relief. And you may discover a friend or family member could use support too.

By implementing these strategies, you can foster a holiday season filled with joy, gratitude, and meaningful connections. Remember, taking care of your mental well-being is a gift that benefits both you and those around you. Let this holiday season be a time of genuine merriment and inner peace.

This year, let's savor the season without regrets. Let's uninvite the Saboteurs to the party!
